A. Brookside Timber Frame recommends FOHC (Free of Heart Center), #1 Appearance Grade lumber. FOHC wood is straighter, stronger, and sturdier than other grades.
A. The mortise is a hole cut into one piece of wood, while the tenon is a projection on the other piece that fits into the mortise. When correctly crafted, a mortise and tenon joint is among the strongest and most durable of wood joints.
A. Brookside recommends Douglas fir over pine or cedar. With its high-density grain, Douglas fir is the best quality wood with the least maintenance. A Douglas fir structure can last for hundreds of years.
A. Douglas fir is a first cousin to cedar and contains the same tar, making it a very weather-durable wood.
A. We source our mill-run Douglas fir from central Colorado. Our premium #1 Appearance Grade timber comes from the west coast of Oregon, Washington, and Canada. Eastern white pine is sourced from southern Indiana and Ohio.
A. Brookside recommends installing a concrete footing at least 36” deep beneath each post. Brookside provides poly 1” stand-off plates on the bottom of each post to prevent the wood from contact with concrete and moisture.
A. Brookside must have the exact measurements ahead of time. Brookside pavilions and pergolas are completely pre-cut with notches for post and brace tenons in the headers. It is next to impossible to change anything on-site. The structures would need to be re-cut at the shop. To prevent mistakes, a project manager will assist you in double-checking all measurements on the drawing.
